Technology in hair restoration is always changing. And, lately, innovations in hair transplant surgery have been improving for the better, for both patients and practices. The days of plugs are long behind us, and instead are being replaced by refined and advanced follicular unit transplantation. The latest is robotic hair restoration — where a robot performs the procedure, facilitated by the doctor and at least one technician.  Restoration Robotics™ is an image-guided system that removes the hair grafts and implants them as well. It can perform a follicular unit extraction procedure, for example, in five hours — versus the manual transplant that can take anywhere from eight to ten hours.

What is so innovative about Restoration Robotics in hair transplant surgery — its ability to use the imaging system to guide the robot arm to the follicular grafts one at a time. Once these grafts are extracted, they are immediately placed in a vial until transplanted — so the grafts are kept moist and ideal for transplantation.

Restoration Robotics have several great pros for the patient:

  • A minimal wound size that results in little to no scarring
  • Minimally less invasive that results in faster healing
  • Speed and efficency

The downside to the robot is only certain colors and textures of hair are ideal candidates for Restoration Robotics. Since it is still a relatively new device, the system can only be used on dark brown or black, straight hair.

With robots becoming the newest technological wave in medical practice, it’s easy to wonder if robots might one day replace doctors in surgery altogether. But that’s not likely — a robot cannot reassure a patient of the procedure, make the patient feel comfortable and in a safe environment nor can a robot ask a patient what they are hoping to achieve out of their hair transplant surgery and deliver their desired hairline.
