With all the innovations and advancements in hair transplant surgery, the risks and complications from the surgery are lesser than ever before. Hair restoration is an outpatient procedure that can be done in one day and one session. Sometimes, additional sessions are needed and discussed during the consultation. The goal is to create as much density in one session for the patient. Although it is a minimally invasive procedure with very little chance of complications, there are additional steps that should be taken to ensure there are no complications. During the consultation, the surgeon will determine if the patient is a candidate for hair restoration by assessing lifestyle and health history of the patient. It's important the patient be transparent about alcohol, cigarette and drug use prior to the surgery as these factors might affect the surgery.

  • Alcohol - Excessive drinking can interfere with medications and might also lead to other complications such as bleeding during the hair transplant surgery. Ethanol, which can be found in wine, beer and spirits, disrupts the blood clotting ability of blood in the body. We advise our patients to be stop alcohol consumption before their procedure to prevent any complications during the procedure.
  • Cigarettes - Cigarettes affect the blood circulation in the scalp by weakening the blood vessels and lessening the blood supply to the scalp. This can potentially affect the new transplanted hairs taking root in the recipient location.
  • Drugs - Any types of drugs, both prescription drugs and otherwise, can sometimes interact negatively with necessary medications prescribed during a hair transplant procedure. These can potentially cause complications such as excessive bleeding during the procedure. For this reason, all drug regimens, including some vitamins, should be stopped or regulated during hair transplant procedure, both before and after the surgery.

It's important during the hair restoration consultation that the patient is honest and upfront about all alcohol, cigarette and drug regimens before the hair transplant surgery. This helps the surgeon determine if the patient is a good candidate for the procedure.
