Hair Restoration Techniques - Behind the skill

Hair restoration techniques adopted by surgeons varies, as well as the results from the hair restoration procedure. The skills vary based both on the technique and skill of the surgeon, how many years they have been in practice, for example – as well as the type of hair restoration that is being performed based on the patient and how many grafts needed. Grafts can have anywhere from 1 to 4 hairs that are transplanted. Today, the two most common procedures are Strip Harvesting and Follicular Unit Extraction, as these are considered the most innovative that yield natural results for the patient. These techniques describe the extraction method of the grafts – the transplantation is done virtually the same for both types of procedures.

Firstly, it’s important to understand that both techniques result in very little scarring, but the scarring is different. In Strip Harvesting, the scar is a small linear line on the back of the scalp. In Follicular Unit Extraction, the scarring are small holes in the donor area. The scarring for both techniques is typically minimal when performed by a skilled surgeon. The advantages of FUE is that the healing process is much faster and minimized recovery time. Typically, whether you are a candidate for FUE depends on how many grafts are needed in a single session.

Hair Restoration Techniques: Strip Harvesting and Follicular Unit Extraction

In Strip Harvesting, the scarring is minimal as well — the linear scar is usually covered up by the patient’s own hair as it grows back in after the hair restoration procedure.  Clinics use either staples or sutures in this technique. Although staples are known to be much faster and easier to place than sutures, they often cause discomfort for the patient. Sutures require much more detail but lay better on the scalp and are more comfortable for the patient.
