Although hair loss in men is more socially acceptable compared to female hair loss, it is not any less damaging to the self-esteem of the sufferer. At our Los Angeles hair restoration clinic, we go over your hair loss ? the cause, the solution and your goals. A receding or non-existent hairline can make you look older than you are and you have no control over it except to cover it up or live with it. If you want to make a change, however, you have minimally-invasive options that will give you natural results.
The Norwood Scale ? How bald are you?
Normal head of hair with no visible hair loss.
The hair is receding in a wedge-shaped pattern.
Same receding pattern as Norwood 2, except the hairline has receded deeper into the frontal area and the temporal area.
This phase is characterized by dramatic recession in the frontal region and temporal area, which is considerably more than that in Norwood lll. In addition, on set of balding at the back of the head can be noticed.
This type is quite similar to Norwood IV, but the only difference lies in the noticeable reduction in the hair density.
The strip of hair connecting the two sides of the head that existed in Norwood 4 and 5 no longer exists in Norwood 6.
Norwood 7 shows hair receding all the way back to the base of the head and the sides just above the ears.
The process of male hair loss
The follicle on a man's head grows straight up. On a woman's head, oil can slip down the hair shaft towards the end. Sebum becomes wax and clogs the pores on a dirty scalp. The shedding of the hair prevents new hair from coming out. It remains weak under the scalp and it is just frozen in time.
The basic causes of natural hair loss in a man, or male pattern baldness, are male hormones or androgens. Testosterone is the most significant of these hormones. A small amount of testosterone is formed into dihydrotestosterone, a derivative, in a man having genes that cause hair loss. So, hair loss and dihydrotestosterone? are more closely related than you think.
When one washes his hair, he finds a few hairs left in the bathtub? this is normal. Some of the hair roots are shedding their old hairs and, in time, these hairs will be replaced with new ones. They are as strong as the previous hairs were. The small white bulb on the end of the hair is called the club and is made up of degenerated cells from within the hair root. If a hair could be pulled from the scalp bringing a hair root with it, the scalp would bleed.
If dihydrotestosterone has been produced, it will be present in the grease, which everyone secretes from the sebum glands in their skin tissue. The dihydrotestosterone will enter the hole in the scalp, from which the hair has come, and miniaturize the hair root and follicle. The new hair growing through will be finer. When this hair is later shed, dihydrotestosterone continues to make hair finer.
This process of follicle and hair root formation will go on until the hair is so fine and seems to be invisible on a mans head. The result is baldness. One can easily tell when someone is bald by comparing the thickness of the hair with the hair at the back of the head.
It takes a bit of skill but one will be able to notice when the hair is starting to thin, its just a mere touch. However, the real reasons for hair loss cannot really be certain. The actual reasons for hair loss can be caused by a complexity of factors.
