Q: How are recipient sites made in hair transplant surgery?

A: At Beverly Hills Hair Restoration, the hair transplant recipient area sites are created using custom-made, ultra-fine blades that range from 0.6 mm to 1.2 mm.

To create the hair transplant recipient area sites, customized blades are designed to fit the size of the transplanted hairs and the sites created for transplantation. Follicular units and the sites vary from patient to patient. When the blades are custom made to be fitted based on the varying size of the grafts and the recipient sites, this allows for the most natural result and growth. Our surgeons create sites using only lateral slits, so the hairs are transplanted one behind the other to achieve maximum density in the recipient area.

The Lateral Slit technique, also known as the coronal or horizontal slit technique, is one of the only techniques that matches the natural hair growth pattern as it occurs in nature. The lateral slits allows the surgeon to have the most control over the angle of the transplanted grafts and the density achieved. Slits made sagitally, meaning parallel to the hair growth pattern, yields pluggy results that will not achieve a natural look and maximum density will not be achieved. This is because the hairs will grow more randomly and atop one another, creating redundant coverage on the scalp.

Q: I am looking to do two hair transplant sessions – after the first session, how long do I have to wait for the second hair transplant? Will the hair follicles from the second session destroy the grafts from the first session?

A: The grafts transplanted during the second session hair transplant procedure would not damage or affect the growth of the grafts from the first session. The hair transplant surgeon would be able to transplant new follicular grafts into the exact same area without causing any damage to your first hair transplant. But the results will look less than desirable, so there is some importance to spacing out the sessions accordingly to give the hair time to grow.

If the surgeon were to transplant new follicular grafts into the same recipient area as the first hair transplant without allowing them first to grow, the results would look unnatural. Placing grafts on top of one another or too close together creates a mini-graft that would result in a pluggy and unnatural hair transplant that is easily avoidable with the right surgeon and technique. It’s important to allow the hairs from the first transplant to grow in for at least the first eight months (and 10-12 months being ideal) so the surgeon is able to plan the distribution of the grafts for the second procedure precisely. Hair transplant surgery is an art – and creating a hairline will have a certain look to it that needs to be mimicked with the second hair transplant session.

Hair transplant surgery is a very refined technique and, unfortunately, not all of the results are desirable. The good news is, it is completely possible to perform a hair transplant procedure in the recipient area that was the same area for a first session hair transplant procedure. For example, if a patient gets a hair transplant in the temple region and the density is not optimal (meaning the recipient area results in sparse-looking hair from poor growth or not enough grafts transplanted) – a second procedure in the same area is possible. Density is a very important aspect of the results of hair restoration – too little or not enough grafts transplanted in the donor area can make the recipient area look sparse and will make it more obvious that the patient did indeed have a hair transplant.
You can tell if the density is undesirable in the recipient area by how sparse the area is on the scalp.

The goal of the hair transplant surgery is to make the hairline and the recipient area look natural – and density is one of the crucial components of this success. With that said, it’s not optimal for a hair transplant surgeon to transplant too many grafts into one area either. This may result in poor growth as well. The number of grafts needed varies from patient to patient as some are in more advanced stages of hair loss compared to others.

During the initial consultation, goals and expectations of the patient and the procedure and the importance of being realistic are discussed with the patient. It is typical that some patients will need more than one hair transplant session to achieve the density they want – depending on the extent of the hair loss and the technique used.
If the density is not the only issue, and bad scarring or pit scarring was left behind, this can also be fixed with a second procedure. The grafts would need to be transplanted in a specific direction so they grow within the current scars to hide them with the transplanted hairs from the second session procedure.

Pluggy results and obvious “hair plugs” are something of the past – today, hair restoration procedures performed by skilled surgeons achieve natural results, maximum density and little to no scarring on the scalp. Hair restoration can reverse hair loss effectively by restoring the hairline or crown area with transplanted hairs from the donor area of the scalp. The most common technique adopted today is Follicular Unit Transpalnt (FUT) where the grafts are either harvested from the back of the scalp or extracted individually, a technique called Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

Beverly Hills Hair Restoration is a world class hair loss treatment center for men and women focused and dedicated solely to the practice of hair transplant surgery and hair loss prevention. A Los Angeles hair restoration clinic that is dedicated to achieving results using the latest techniques and innovations in hair restoration surgery.
Minimally Invasive Procedures up 6% as the Economy Improves, New FUE Technique to Cover Scarring Adopted by Hair Transplant Clinic

The economy is improving and an increase in cosmetic surgeries in 2012 proves the fact, according to a recent report by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). A Los Angeles Hair Transplant clinic adapts to the demand for scar revision procedures by offering a new technique.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) April 23, 2013

In 2012, there were 14.6 million cosmetic procedures according to statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and, although there was a slight decline in surgical procedures – smaller, less invasive procedures were extremely favorable in 2012.

One procedure that saw an increase was scar revision procedures. A reconstructive procedure, scar revision is meant to minimize or remove a scar so it is more consistent with the skin tone and texture of the skin. Scar revision can range from a scar left from a cosmetic procedure to a scar left behind from a less invasive procedure such as hair transplant surgery.

A bad scar from a previous hair transplant surgery is usually due to poor or old techniques, says medical director of Beverly Hills Hair Restoration Dr. John Kahen, MD. “The scar becomes as difficult to deal with as the hair loss, and patients need more density in the area to achieve a natural hairline with minimal scarring.”

Watch Follicular Unit Extraction Procedure performed at Beverly Hills Hair Restoration

At Beverly Hills Hair Restoration, a hair transplant clinic in Los Angeles, a new technique is being offered using Follicular Unit Extraction to achieve scar revision for patients who want to cover scars from previous hair transplant procedures. In this specialized scar revision technique, Dr. Kahen extracts each follicular unit individually using Follicular Unit Extraction technique and transplants it to the scarring area. This allows the transplanted hairs to grow through and over the scar. If a hair transplant surgery is desired by the patient, the surgeon will also be able to achieve more density using the FUE technique in the same session.

The Follicular Unit Extraction technique allows Beverly Hills Hair Restoration to achieve minimal scarring for patients who wear their hair very short or are looking to avoid the linear scar. This innovative hair transplant technique has become more popular than ever in hair transplant surgery as patients desire the most natural looking hair transplant surgery with the least scarring.

Right after the FUE procedure, there will be small red dots in the recipient and donor area where the follicular units were extracted (left photo). Then, as the hair grows in, the tiny dots begin to heal and become undetectable (right photo).

Before and After FUE Hair Transplant: Main Benefits

This is one of the main benefits of follicular unit extraction and probably one of the reasons why it is so popular. There is no linear scar on the back of the scalp and the small holes where the follicular units are extracted as well as the area where they are transplanted heals in a way that the scarring is virtually undetectable. Keep in mind that your scalp will experience some inflammation and redness immediately after the procedure – but patients are pleasantly surprised when they realize how quickly the scalp heals from follicular unit extraction.

It seems as if Follicular Unit Extraction is becoming the more popular hair transplant technique option for those suffering from genetic hair loss. But why, exactly? The Strip Harvesting Technique can be very effective as a permanent solution and if performed by a skilled surgeon, can leave behind such minimal scarring it’s undetectable (thanks to a technique called tricophytic closure). But Follicular Unit Extraction has taken the front seat these days as the more modern approach to hair restoration that won’t leave behind scarring or result in a “pluggy look.” And this could be for several reasons.

#1 The Hype
One potential factor in the popularity of FUE is the hype around it created by clinics, surgeons and appealing advertisements. It’s a positive direction hair transplant surgery is taking when surgeons and clinics are dedicated to offering the most innovative and advanced techniques in hair restoration – and FUE has become the back bone of that dedication.

#2 The Technology and the Robot
Restoration Robotics and the ARTAS Robotic System has really began to take flight in the hair restoration industry. They claim to extend human capability by extracting follicular units at a much quicker rate compared to performing it manually. This technology only further boasts FUE as a choice option for hair restoration because the procedure can be performed faster (since manual FUE is very tedious and requires a precise and skilled surgeon.) The drawback of robotic hair restoration? Well, there really is no drawback to the robot, but it does not replace a skilled surgeon and technicians. Since the robot only extracts the follicular grafts, the surgeon and technicians still perform the placement of the grafts to the balding (recipient area).

#3 The Technique
The obvious reason for the popularity of Follicular Unit Extraction could simply be due to the fact that it is a very good technique when performed for the right candidate by the right surgeon. Follicular Unit Extraction is a very innovative and precise technique that offers natural results with undetectable scarring – which makes it a very attractive option. At Beverly Hills Hair Restoration, we first determine if the patient is a good candidate for Follicular Unit Extraction before going ahead with the surgery. Hair texture, stage of hair loss and number of grafts needed all factor into this determination.

Hair loss, or baldness, could be an indicator of more serious health risks later in life, such as heart attack and heart disease, according to a new study by the American Heart Association.

Hair loss could be an indicator of more serious health risks, according to a new study by the American Heart Association. The study found that people with three visible aging signs are at a higher risk for heart attack and heart disease. One of the three aging signs were hair loss or a receding hairline.
Hair loss included charateristics such as a receding hairline at the temples and a bald spot on the back or on the top of the scalp.
The Danish study by the American Heart Association, where researchers analyzed about 11,000 men and women aged 40 and older, found some interesting results. Of the participants, 3,041 of them developed heart disease and 1,708 suffered a heart attack over 35 years of follow-up by the researchers. Hair loss was one of the four signs of heart disease that weren’t as obvious as smoking or obesity. From these results, the study found that men with three aging characteristics were at 57% higher risk for a heart attack and 39% higher risk for heart disease.

Beverly Hills Hair Restoration, a hair transplant clinic in Los Angeles, advises that those experiencing hair loss determine what is causing the condition. A hair and scalp analysis, says Medical Director John Kahen, M.D., can determine if the hair loss is an indicator of a more serious health condition. While there is no way to determine if your genetic hair loss is an indicator of heart conditions later in life, more education and knowledge about the condition is a positive step, said the director.

As hair transplant techniques continue to become more innovative with the goal of little to no scarring left behind, many patients at a Los Angeles hair transplant clinic are starting to request techniques that yield the most natural results with minimal scarring.

Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) April 11, 2013

As innovations in surgical techniques continue to advance, there has been a significant focus on achieving natural results with minimal to zero scarring. This is true at Beverly Hills Hair Restoration in Los Angeles, California. Medical Director Dr. John Kahen M.D. says his patients are even starting to request certain techniques.

This means patients are doing their research, which is a positive direction for hair restoration, says the medical director. Follicular Unit Extraction is in higher demand now more than ever as patients learn the FUE technique results in the least amount of scarring in the donor hair area where the grafts are extracted.

Dr. Kahen mentions there may be one drawback to this increasing demand, saying that not every person is an ideal candidate for the FUE technique. “For patients that need a certain number of grafts or for patients with certain hair textures, Strip Harvesting is a more favorable technique.”

In Strip Harvest, a strip of skin is removed from the back of the scalp. The grafts are then dissected into follicular units of anywhere from one to our hairs per graft – and then transplanted to the recipient area. In Follicular Unit Extraction, the follicular grafts are extracted one by one and then transplanted. The fact that FUE is such a specialized and detailed technique is one of the reasons patients seek it out so specifically, he notes.

Follicular Unit Extraction was first successfully performed in 1989 in Australia by Dr. Ray Woods using a 1 mm needle. Dr. Kahen specializes in creating incisions with micro-blades of less than one millimeter in diameter – making the incisions smaller and, as they heal, virtually undetectable.

Question: What is the technique used to make recipient hair transplant incisions during a hair restoration procedure?

Answer: At Beverly Hills Hair Restoration, our patients are usually concerned with if the hair transplant results will be natural – and we usually see concerns of the results looking “pluggy” as they did in the past with less innovative techniques in hair transplant surgery. The technique used to make the hair transplant incisions, also known as recipient sites, is one of the most crucial parts of the process in insuring the results avoid looking like plugs – so this is a very important question. Top hair transplant clinics usually boast their own specialized technique so this is an important question to ask during a hair transplant consultation, for example.

At our hair transplant clinic, we create customized blades based on the hair follicles of the patient. This allows our surgeons to make the smallest recipient incisions . These custom-made blades allow for the most natural results, so that when the hair grows in, the hair follicles lie on top of each other, giving you a full head of hair and an undetectable hair transplant.

During the beginning of the hair transplant procedure, the follicular units are dissected and fitted to the recipient sites created with the custom-made blades. Along with this refined technique, the surgeon also implants the follicular units to the natural degree of hair growth – so the hair transplant is natural – never those awful plugs from past techniques.

This is an important question for anyone seeking hair loss treatment solutions such as hair restoration.
